About Biblioteca Municipal Maria Natércia Ruivo
Brief History
From an almost sacred space, providing a public information service, society demands that the Public Library transform itself into a truly useful information service that is relevant and up to date, an educational, cultural and leisure hub, and that it assert itself as a privileged interlocutor, favouring open dialogue with the community.
In this sense, the objectives of the BMMNR are also set in this context, although the path is not without intrinsic or external obstacles that hinder its full realisation. In fact, when planned, intentions are almost always more ambitious than the desires, availability or possibilities that the moment dictates.
Open to the public since 2011, it is part of the RPBP. In view of the changes in today’s society, the library is required to take on new responsibilities, and a change in paradigms is a requirement that determines the very survival of the institution. From its collection to information, from custody to access, the BMMMNR seeks to reposition itself and frequently rethink its practices.
In this context, the BMMNR therefore seeks not to limit its activities to its documentary collections and is expanding its capabilities and functions. In line with this, the adaptation of the BP to the new informational archetype is proclaimed today. As a result of the social transformations brought about by new information technologies, the BP is expected to provide a combined service: informational and cultural, transcending its own physical limits towards global wisdom, in a broad global network, and that is the path we are seeking to follow.
